My sweet little sister Kajal has asked me several times to come visit her at her workplace. She has a part time job at a coffee place in the centre of Rotterdam city. If you ever pay a visit to Rotterdam, you should check this place out. It’s called ‘De Koffiebar’ and my sister loves working there. Today, after many promises, I finally went to ‘De Koffiebar’. I noticed that there was a variety of people at the coffee place. An older couple was sipping their coffee, a group of what seemed to be close friends was very much ‘laughing out loud’ , a man and a woman who were obviously on a date and some people who were enjoying their drinks or snacks in solitude. When sitting on the terrace, you can spot all kinds of people passing by in this busy shopping street called Karel Doormanstraat. When you travel by tram, it’s only 5 minutes away from Rotterdam Central station.
I went alone too to see how it felt being at this coffee place all by myself. The service was friendly but not obtrusive. I could take my time to get settled. The benches against the wall were very comfortable so I told my sister who was working on this Sunday that I would be sitting in the back. From there I could see the rest of the coffee place and enjoy my coffee quietly. Kajal came rushing to tell a waitress that she would be waiting me. She showed me the menu. There were quite a few choices for coffee lovers and although it was very tempting to order a big frozen coffee, I ordered a small hot coffee. Why? Well, Kajal had been bragging about one of the pastries and I asked her to bring me that particular one so I could taste what the fuss was all about. Kajal knows I really love the combination of peanuts and chocolate like in one of world’s most famous chocolate bars so she was absolutely sure I would love this. It was a sweet one she said so that’s why I went easy on the sugar and decided to have a smaller coffee.
The sweet little pastry is called a Peanut butter stack and when my sister served it on my table I could see why. It looked pretty solid. Yes there were peanuts and a brownie like cake with caramel. I tasted all layers at once and I tasted the chocolate cake, something crisp, the sweetness of the caramel and the salty peanuts. Yes, she knows me well: It was delicious! I thought it was a little bit too sweet but still, it was tasty. I’m inspired to make a less sweeter version of this cake myself. I’ll make it soon and share my recipe!
‘De Koffiebar’ serves Italian Buscaglione coffee and I had ordered the Café Crema. It was a strong kind of coffee and fortunately I like it that way. A glass of water was included in the order. I love that because sometimes coffee leaves me feeling dehydrated. I enjoyed this little cup of coffee and water afterwards. Still, I saw some people ordering frozen coffees and I couldn’t help but stare. White chocolate on top of the whipped cream?? Heavenly! I know, I’m in love with frozen coffees but I knew that would be too much of sweetness all together. I’m glad I ordered a small one. It matched well with my snack. Sitting there felt really comfortable and everybody was enjoying themselves. I chatted a little bit with my sister but she was quite busy too so I left fulfilled after an hour or so. I would definitely buy that sweet snack again and I’m coming back to try some frozen coffee of course. Yes sinful it was this Sunday!
